On starting Happenstance…

I wrote this article for Arts in Bushwick to share resources and lend support to others thinking about starting creative businesses in Bushwick.  Each day I am thankful that I am able to run my studio and do what I love for a living.  Maybe someone else will take heart once they see what’s been accomplished here.

Flat and Curved Smithed Bracelets

These little bracelets were a smithing challenge to myself.  I had a little leftover 10 gauge bronze wire from a commission piece, so I decided to see how dramatically I could shift the wire into something wearable.  The top bracelet has a flattened mid section and raised sides, and the bottom bracelet has flattened sides and a raised/curved top.  I really like the way these lay against the body, check out the shots below for more images of these rustic, oxidized cuffs.

Mussel and Pearl Hair Stick

During the Democratic and Republican National Conventions, and throughout the Presidential and Vice Presidential debates I do my best to stay informed by watching as much direct source information as possible. Meaning, as best I can, I listen to folks giving speeches live, in real time, without moderation/pundit babble.  I have trouble though, multi-tasker that I am, sitting still, not fidgeting and staying focused.  This year, to combat that issue I did all the chasing and repoussee for this piece in my studio.  Each time I’d sit down to listen to a speech I’d do another round of work on this small copper piece.  I wasn’t sure what it would end up being, but in the end I decided on a hair ornament, something that I use quite frequently (most often it’s a pencil in my studio).  I liked the hammered texture, and the abstract form reminded me of a freshwater mussel, so I soldered in a pearl post, attached a stem/stick of sorts, blackened the copper and dipped the piece in a thin layer of iridescent epoxy resin.  It’s a hard piece to photograph because of the contrasts of the black/shiny copper, the pearl and the sterling stick base.  Hopefully you get the gist of this approx 2″ x 1.75″ hair ornament, with approx. 6.5″ stick.  Have a look-see!

Hi All,

I know this is my jewelry website, but you should know that I’m also a painter, and I teach painting and drawing as well.  I’ve just started teaching a new series of live webcam classes at  Here’s a link to my profile:

Look it up if you or someone you know is interested in learning painting an drawing via computer.  And of course, as always, you can follow the link to where I teach an online jewelry class.  Thanks for all the comments, and sorry to have abandoned my website for so long!
